The Importance of Getting a Roof Inspection For Your Tomball Roof

The Importance of Getting a Roof Inspection For Your Tomball Roof

Summer doesn’t officially start until June 20, 2020, so it’s a great time to get your seasonal inspection. After the recent rainstorms scattered across Houston, and with hurricane season fast approaching, you want your roof to be in the best possible condition. The best way to determine if this is the case is by scheduling a free seasonal roof inspection on your Tomball roof.

Seasonal Inspections Are the Best Way to Regularly Check Up On the Condition of Your Roof

We have seen a lot of roofs throughout Tomball and the greater Houston area, thanks to our 40+ years of roofing experience. Because of this, we recommend that you get a seasonal roof inspection twice a year. Although you can do this at any time during the year, we recommend the spring and the fall, since the weather is far milder during this time. If not, don’t worry–we will still happily inspect your roof in the summer and winter.

Even though we recommend these semi-annual inspections, we understand that some Tomball homeowners prefer to prolong an inspection because they worry that, if an inspection is done too early, many issues or problems will arise. However, this is counterintuitive. If you procrastinate on your inspection, you may allow issues that were once really minor to become much more severe, and even dangerous. This could lead to problems such as mold, rot, or roof leaks.

Tomball Roof Inspection Protects Your Investment

Professional inspections are a fantastic preventative measure to take when caring for your roof, but you can–and should–also conduct a minor inspection in between, in addition to following our advice on how to maintain your Houston roof. You don’t need to climb on your roof for this either. Simply keep an eye on your shingles and gutters from the ground or from a nearby window. Look for signs of shingle damage and let our Houston roofer know if you see anything out of the ordinary.

Spring is the Perfect Time to Get Your Houston Roof Inspected

Spring is the Perfect Time to Get Your Houston Roof Inspected

Rain is falling, people are asking for recommendations for “the best crawfish”, and the weather is shifting little by little. Spring is near, which means it is almost time for your seasonal Houston roof inspection. By getting your roof inspected now, our team at Amstill Roofing can ensure that your roof is good to go before summer arrives along with the Atlantic hurricane season.

How Houston’s Hurricane Season Can Impact Your Roof if it Hasn’t Been Inspected

Even though there is still some time before June 1, time flies and it’s easy to unintentionally forget about getting your roof checked. This is the last thing we want because most homeowners realize they forgot about their roof when severe damage has already occurred. Our intention is to avoid this with an early inspection.

Storm Wind Damage

If you leave your roof unchecked by professionals, your chances of roof damage increase significantly. There could be loose, curled shingles that fly off as a result of heavy wind damage, making your roof all the more prone to leaks and the subsequent water damage. Furthermore, because shingles are installed together and attached to one another, one missing shingle quickly compromises the bond between the neighboring shingles, causing a chain reaction.

Hail Storm Damage

If it hails, which sometimes it does in the warmer season, a weak roof that hasn’t had any repairs in years may exhibit buckled or cracked shingles, which also allow for heavy rain to flow into the house. Roof shingles are topped off with granules that serve as an extra barrier between hail and the underlying asphalt. It’s important to note that hail is notorious for chipping those granules, weakening your older shingles. You may not notice a roof leak right away, but your insulation will get wet and create a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. If it continuously rains, the water will have nowhere else to go, inevitably leaking through your ceiling.

What Our Houston Roofers Look For During a Roof Inspection

What Our Houston Roofers Look For During a Roof Inspection

Getting a Houston roof inspection is the best preventative measure you can take to ensure your roof is in good condition. Because you want to be sure that your roof provides you, your family, and the rest of your home’s structure what the right protection, it’s important to regularly get an inspection. We recommend getting your roof inspected at least twice a year because this helps us catch any signs that you may need a roof repair or a roof replacement before the problem becomes excessively costly and puts you at risk.

What Do Roofers Look For When Inspecting a Houston Roof?

There are many signs that your Houston roof has been damaged. Some are subtle, and some are impossible to miss. When you seek Amstill Roofing’s help with an inspection, rest assured that we will catch even the subtlest signs of damage and make appropriate recommendations.

How Old Your Roof Is

We may first ask you about the age of your roof, since a Houston roof lasts 20 years on average. If you’ve had your roof for longer, chances are it’s about time we do a full replacement. Often, roof rot indicates that it’s time for a brand new roof,

The Condition of Your Shingles

It’s dangerous to inspect your roof yourself if you lack the proper training and equipment. Our team’s eyes have been working on roofs for over 40 years, so they have seen just about any and all signs of roof damage. The following signs of damage your shingles may show include:

Curling or Buckling Shingles

Roof shingles should lay flat on your roof when intact and properly installed. Corner shingles are more prone to curling and flying off, especially during Houston’s hurricane season. Unfortunately, this creates a chain reaction; once one shingle is loose, the adjacent shingles also become loose and compromise your roof.

We refer to buckling shingles as those that have a dip in them. When shingles have dipped or buckled, they are severely weakened. This does not help keep precipitation away from your roof, which makes room for leaks.

Cracked Shingles and Flashing

Flashing, otherwise known as chimney flashing, essentially acts as a seal between the roof and your chimney. If this is cracked, it’s very easy for water to seep into your home, causing leaks that can become severe. Similarly, cracked shingles may also open up crevices for water to make its way into your home.

The New Year is the Perfect Time to Get Your Houston Roof Inspected

The New Year is the Perfect Time to Get Your Houston Roof Inspected

Now that it’s a brand new year and the holidays have been thoroughly enjoyed, it is a great time for a roof inspection. Throughout the duration of 2019, your roof has endured rain damage, wind damage, storm damage, and has held up the weight of holiday decorations while keeping you and your family warm and safe inside. After all of that, the start of 2020 is the perfect time to get a free roof inspection.

How Often Should You Get Your Houston Roof Inspected?

With the new year comes new year’s resolutions, and for our customers, one of those resolutions may be to take better care of the home, remodel, or redecorate it to help modernize it. In order to keep your house looking its best, we recommend you request an inspection twice a year; once in the spring, and a second time in the fall.

Inspecting during these seasons gives our roofers a good idea of how much your roof endured in the more extreme seasons, and how much your roof will withstand the upcoming weather conditions as we transition to spring and then summer. If you didn’t get a roof inspection in the fall, however, you can still request one with us now, especially if you feel your roof has undergone a lot of damage and/or your shingle warranty has expired.

What Does Amstill Roofing Look for in Our Inspections?

There are many signs that your Houston roof has undergone damage. Sometimes they are subtle enough that less experienced eyes may overlook, but these subtle signs can still result in significant damage and repair bills if left unaddressed.

The signs we look for include:

  • Shingle curling
  • Missing shingles
  • Buckling shingles or dips in the rooftop
  • Loose/cracked flashing and shingles
  • Missing shingle granules

No two roofs are alike. Each one has different contours and layouts, so each indicator will give us insight on what further damage your roof might undergo. How much of the roof is affected and how severe the damage is will determine whether a roof repair will suffice, or if a roof replacement is necessary and urgent.

Colder Weather Approaches - Have You Received Your Houston Roof Inspection Yet?

Colder Weather Approaches - Have You Received Your Houston Roof Inspection Yet?

If you read our blog about how Houston’s winter weather can affect our rooftops, then you may know it’s about time for a seasonal inspection. We recommend seasonal inspections at least twice a year because they are the best, most effective way to ensure your roof is strong, safe, and secure.

Better Late Than Never - Seasonal Inspections Help Monitor Your Houston Roof’s Integrity

Our trained roof inspectors recommend free inspections at least twice a year, in the spring and in the fall, since the weather is more mild at this time. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t still inspect your roof for free now.

We find that some of our customers may decide to procrastinate on inspections because they worry that if they get an inspection too early and all is clear, then before they know it, by the time it gets chillier, they'll make way for winter weather to damage their roof. However, while this may sound true, delaying your inspections will actually allow issues that were once minor became quite serious and even dangerous. Such issues may manifest as multiple leaks or rotting wood, which weakens the overall structure. At this point, a replacement is absolutely necessary to protect you and your family. If we inspect early, we can complete repairs that strengthen your roof for years so that a premature replacement isn’t necessary.

Seasonal Inspections Help Protect Your Investment

Although regular professional inspections are necessary, we also recommend you keep an eye on your roof as well. No need to climb onto your roof–that’s what our roof inspectors do. However, you can still keep an eye on your shingles and look out for any curling or buckling. We also recommend checking your attic periodically to see if you can spot any leaks.
