Spotting and Addressing Houston Roof Damage

Spotting and Addressing Houston Roof Damage

Now that we are officially in spring, more rain will be coming our way and before we know it, so will Houston’s infamous hurricane season. Now is an important time to know how to spot and address roof damage before it leads to greater, more costly consequences.

Think About How Long You’ve Had Your Current Roof

Spotting damage may start with thinking about how old your roof is. Most Houston roofs last an average of 20 years, but if you used affordable shingles, your roof may last about 10-15 years. If you’ve had your economical roof for longer than this, though, then there is likely a lot of damage. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may need a roof repair or a complete roof replacement.

On the other hand, if you used the most expensive shingles, then there is a chance your roof may last 25-30 years (or more) and damage may not be as evident.

Look for Damage in Your Attic

We always recommend going into your attic and looking around for water stains, damp insulation, or even any warped walls or ceilings. If you spot these signs, then this indicates water damage, which could either occur from plumbing or from a weakened roof. Not addressing it could result in devastating leaks.

Are Your Shingles Sturdy?

The most efficient way to spot roof damage is by looking at your shingles. They should lay flat, but corner shingles are most prone to curling and then flying off. This is easy to do from below your roof, but it’s important to do a thorough inspection.

Addressing Roof Damage

If you suspect your roof has sustained damage, we recommend getting a free inspection. When we complete a free inspection we make sure to be thorough and look for even the subtlest signs that indicate damage. Among the signs of roof damage we look for are missing shingle granules, any spots of hail damage, cracks, and loose flashing.

Once we complete our inspection, we will make recommendations for how to fix any damage. A roof repair is ideal if problem spots are few and sparse, but a roof replacement is the better option if your roof has multiple problem spots that render the entire roof ineffective, putting your safety at risk.
